The 17th parallel line was an imaginary line that divided Vietnam into two parts during the Cold War. The line was agreed upon in the Geneva Accords of 1954, which were intended to end the First Indochina War between France and Vietnam. The line ran along the 17th parallel of latitude and separated North Vietnam (ruled by the communist regime) from South Vietnam (a western-backed nationalist government). The line was heavily guarded by both sides, and tensions between North and South Vietnam continued to escalate, leading to the Vietnam War. The line ceased to exist after the reunification of Vietnam in 1976.
